"Not Responding" message

Office 3013/ Excel and word.  Mostly excel:  recently I have screen fade, lock-up and "Not responding" message shows top left.  If I just sit back and wait, program finally responds and I can proceed.  I would like to find the cause and repair action.  thanks

Looks like, as I said above, most programs I use, Word, excel, and MS solitaire (is this the culprit?), lock up for 15-20 seconds and sometimes more.  Screen turns to a faded white, although you can still see the open program.

Havent tried all in Safe mode as yet.  Have Extensions= Print friendly PDF,  Plus, TrendMicro Anti-virus (never had problems with this),

    Have run Malware Bytes-all O.K.

Sorry....didnt work.  still getting the Not responding.  any other ideas?

OK...went through all the checks..It is my Windows 10/64 computer (laptop).  every program used shows same message....pauses for maybe a minute, then responds.  This is happening in excel, word, Outlook (most used programs)

Do you shut your computer down when not using or put it into hibernation? I have a laptop that I generally just close the lid and it goes into hibernation. Occasionally I get a problem similar to what you describe and my fix is to perform a re-start.

I speculate that something gets out of kilter and the re-start makes it all good again. "Re-start" is preferable to "Shut down" and  "start up" again because I understand that re-start does somewhat more than shut down and start up.
