All Microsoft programs keep shutting down 'unexpectedly' and repeatedly

I am using Microsoft office Home & Business 2011 on my Mac Book Pro since early 2013. Since I bought a new Mac now, which unfortunately is no longer supported by Microsoft 2011, I called yesterday to find out if I can still use the same licence on the new laptop and if not, what product would be best.

I was told that I need to purchase a new license for my new Mac (so much for lifetime licences....) I am not very pleased with this situation, but decided to bite the bullet and purchase a new licence in the next couple of days to finish setting up my new laptop. In the meantime, I figured I can use Microsoft, Word and PP on my old Mac for my daily work. However, ironically since TODAY my Microsoft Office keeps crashing (this hardly ever happened before). It keeps shutting down, saying quit unexpectedly. This has been happening ALL DAY LONG. I have restarted the laptop a couple of times, but the problem persists. I can barely type 1 word and it shuts down. What on earth??

Thank you Jim. In the meantime I bought a new licence and installed it on my new Mac. I did upgrade the old one to the latest version (prior to moving my files across), which I suppose is what caused the problem... I just wish someone (at the Apple store) would have told me before investing into my new laptop i.e. making me aware, as it would have saved me hours of hassle and headache...

Regarding your Excel 2011 license - it is good forever as long as you never change your hardware or operating system. There are no updates to Excel 2011 beyond version 14.7.7

Which brings up the question, do you have version 14.7.7 on your old laptop?  To find out, go to the Excel menu and choose About Excel. If you need to update, go to the Help menu in any Office app and choose Check for Updates. That's the first troubleshooting step to take to fix the crashing problem.

Another thing to consider is, "What changed?"  Since your applications were stable basically forever, something must have changed on your Mac. Did you install or remove a font? Change Mac OS X? You might run Disk Utility to verify the startup volume and fix errors, if there are any.
