Uninstall a device from the Microsoft 365 Account

Hey so I have a student account and we are limited to 5 devices. I changed my laptop twice now so I have two dead accounts in my apps and devices but I'm not sure how to uninstall them. I looked through forums and when I go to Apps and Devices under my account it just says that I can sign out office but it also says signing out doesn't remove the device. I reset both laptops before I sold them but I would like them to be removed from my apps and devices so I can install these products on my new laptop.

Hi skydanxer,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

According to your description, it seems that you are using education account and you have changed laptop twice, and you have gone to Apps & Devices under account to signed out them. And you want to remove Office products from those devices and you want to install Office on new laptop.

May I know if my understanding is right? If so, we want to explain that to you:

You mentioned that you have signed out via going to Apps & Devices, may I know  if you went to https://portal.office.com/Account/#home > Apps & devices and sign out the device? As shown below:

If so, it can take up to 72 hours for Office to detect that you signed out remotely. After you sign out of Office, you still can view and print documents from that device, but you won't be able to edit them or create new ones. If you want to use Microsoft 365 on the device, you'll need to sign in to Microsoft 365 when prompted. However, if you want to uninstall Office from that computer, we’re afraid that there is no out of box way to uninstall Office from the old computer remotely. The only possible way to remove Office applications we can think of is to uninstall it in old computer directly. Since you have reset your laptops, so the Office applications may have been uninstalled.

At the same time, if you sign out this device from https://portal.office.com/Account/#home , this device will not be counted as one of the five installations. And it means that it deactivate an installation of Office. So after that, you can just download Office products and activate Office applications on new laptop.

For more details, you can refer to this article: Deactivate an installation of Office.

If my understanding above is not consistent with yours, you can post back and provide more details about your situation and requirement.

Thank you for your understanding!

Best Regards,

Sukie

    1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices, sign in, and find the device you want to remove.
    2. Select Show details to see info for that device.
    3. Under your device's name, select More actions > Remove .
    4. Review your device details, select the box for I'm ready to remove this device, then select Remove

    Hi skydanxer,

We appreciate that you posted back and confirmed the situation with us.

To answer your question, if you click sign out under Account, it will not count for the 5 devices installation, and as we mentioned above, if you click Sign out, it will deactivate the installation on that device. If you don't want to use Office on that device, you can go to  https://portal.office.com/Account/#home to sign out it, then you can download and activate office on another device.

Hope the suggestion above can help you, and if you have any other questions, you can also post back and we will try our best to help you.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

yep! This is exactly how my screen looks like. I have not signed out yet but to clarify if I sign out of office on the device it will not count for the 5 device limit?
