Remove highlighting

Split from this thread.

My problem is a related one.  I've got a whole lot of text that is highlighted and I need to remove the highlighting.  I used to do that by clicking on no colour but the no colour square has turned grey (which is my highlighting colour) and I can't work out how to turn it back so that there is no colour there.

I've also been struggling with stop highlighting as an alternative method so I'll see whether the advice above means I can use that instead.  But even if I can I'd appreciated advice as to how I can restore the no colour option,  Thanks,

If I have a text that contains highlighted portions (in one or more colors), I can use Ctrl+A (or Ctrl+click in the left margin) to Select All and then click No Color, which removes all the highlighting.

Thank you (and thanks to Stefan for  creating a new thread for this query).  As I said I don't want to remove all the shading, which Ctrl + A does.  I've tried clicking in the margin but that doesn't seem to be the answer either.  Is there some way of restoring no colour so that I can apply it to a selected piece of text?  Thanks.

Are you referring to Shading or Highlighting? In Word, there is a difference.

Text Highlight Color can be applied via the  button on the Home tab. To remove all Highlight from a selection, you make use of that same button and choose the No Color option:

Shading, on the other hand, can be applied to whole paragraphs or to text characters, and you can remove it via the Borders and Shading dialog box:

The example below illustrates removing shading from text characters.

I'm referring to highlighting using the highlighting box,  My problem is that the no colour box doesn't seem to work anymore (other than if I remove all highlighting with ctrl + A as you suggested).  It used to work so I don't understand what has happened,

No Color should work the same even if your selection is smaller than a whole document.

In what way is it not working? Is the option unavailable or does it just not work?

Are you allowed to share the document?
