Update ADConnect when using a SQL server database

Last year we've upgraded ADConnect and changed it to use a SQL server database instead of SQL Express database.

Now I see that we are a lot of versions behind (1.2.70) and I'm looking to update.

So now I've 2 questions which I hope you can answer:

  1. Can I do an inplace upgrade? (It's a single server)

Will it read the configuration and will it update automatically and preserve the connection to the SQL Server database? Or do I have to do a swing migration because it isn't a SQL Express database anymore?

  1. Is it possible to activate automatic update? In the documentation I can only read that automatic update is the default when using a SQL Express database. But there is no information to be found if automatic update is possible at all when using a SQL server database. (Source)

Already thanks for any information on this issue.

    Hi Ron,

You should do an in-place upgrade since it's a single server. The Swing migration will need at least two servers - one active server and one staging server. The normal synchronization will stop during upgrade, so the connection will lost temporarily. After finish, normal delta synchronization will start again.

For more details about AAD Connect Automatic upgrade, you can referring to the following article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/how-to-connect-install-automatic-upgrade. Automatic upgrade is not supported when you are not using a SQL Server Express LocalDB database.

I hope the above information helps.

    Best Regards,

    Shawn

    Hi Shawn,

Thank you for your answers, very clear.

I've looked into the synchronization but when it does a full sync it will take 2h+.

So we're looking for the swing migration to minimize downtime.

But when I read the article it says: 'the staging mode is different since the server has its own SQL database (See:staging-mode)

Does that mean that the new server for the swing method needs its own (new) SQL instance?

Edit: Never mind, I've found the answer myself already: Yes it does need it's own database.
