Cannot overwrite highlighted text directly with the paste function

In MS Word, when I copy several lines or a paragraph of text, and then highlight other text that I desire to replace with the copied text, it doesn not overwrite what I have highlighted. It simply inserts the text before and retains the original text.

I've played with the advanced options controling overwrite, insert, and such, but to no avail.

Anyone know what I should do? Do I have to reinstall MS Word. Or is this a Windows Clipboard issue?

Have you made sure that the check box 'Typing replaces selected text' in File > Options > Advanced is ticked?
