Whenever I open a file from SharePoint Excel asks if I want to edit the file.  Yes, I ALWAYS want to edit the file, so how do I get it to open in Edit mode for all my Excel spreadsheets?

    Hi billiop,

I guess Excel open the file in protected view and you need to enable editing.

You may try the steps provided below and check if that helps:

    1. Open Excel program, Click the File tab.
    2. Click on ‘Options’; the Options dialog box appears.
    3. Click Trust Center and then click Trust Center Settings.
    4. In the Trust Center, click File Block Settings.
    5. Select Open selected file types in Protected View and allow editing.
    6. Once done try to open any Excel file and verify the status.
    7. Follow the same steps for Word application as well.

For further queries, reply and we would be happy to assist.

    Regards,

    Eric

I adjusted the settings as recommended and thought this looked like it would finally resolve the issue.  Unfortunately, it made no difference.  I still get this when I open the file off the SharePoint site:

Anything else I can try?  It doesn't do this with Excel 2010.

Thanks for getting back to me.

    1. Where is the files stored? SharePoint Online or SharePoint Sever?
    2. You open it from browser or sync folder?

Please try following step and check if there is any improvement.

Go to Trust Center - Trust Center settings. On the Left, click 'Protected View'. On the right side, uncheck the 3 options found there. Restart Excel and check to see if those files are still opening in 'Read Only' mode.

    Regards,

    Eric

They're stored in SharePoint Online.  I open them from a sync folder.

When I open from online, it's even more confusing.  I get this message:

    So I checked the settings...

    Hi billiop,

Please check all options in File Block Settings then close all Office applications and reopen the file from Online see if the issue happen again.

If the issue disapear then open it in sync folder and verify the result.

If the issue still persists, what's the version of your Excel?

    Regards,

    Eric
