Hi,

I'm using an Excel file in Microsoft Teams, with tables and data validation drop-down lists for easy data entry.

When I open this file in Teams (Excel-online) and try to enter data by using data validation drop-down list :

The table doesn't automatically expand rows :

When I open the same file in desktop application of Excel, everything works fine, the same table automatically expands :

Also, when I cancel data validation drop-down list and enter date manually in Excel-Online version in Teams:

There's no problem, table automatically expands :

As a result; in Teams Excel-Online version, tables doesn't expand with data entry by using data validation drop-down lists.

I'm using the same file for about 1 year, this problem started to happen on exactly 11th August 2020 Tuesday. I don't know what happened on that day, but smoothly working file stopped to work, and I'm in trouble right now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi HaydarMuradoglu,

Thank you for querying in this forum. We understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it. And we will try our best to help you.

According to your description, it seems that tables doesn't expand with data entry by using data validation drop-down lists in Microsoft Teams, however, it works fine in Excel client. And you can also typed date manually, it works fine.

If so, we have tested it on our side, we went to Excel client and created a table with data validation drop-down list, then we uploaded this file to Microsoft Teams, then we opened it and selected value from data validation drop-down list, and we found it works fine, as shown below:

We cannot reproduce the same situation as yours. Given this situation, if you are using Microsoft Teams client, we’d suggest you go to Teams Online to check if the same problem will occur.

If the same problem still persists after trying the suggestions above, to narrow down this issue, could you provide the information below?

    1. May I know if only this file has this problem? You can create a new file to check if the same problem will occur.
    2. May I know if this problem also occurs on Teams Online? Could you also provide the version of Microsoft Teams? You can click your avatar in your Teams > About > Version and provide the screenshot of your Teams.
    3. You can also upload this file to OneDrive for business directly and open it in Excel Online to check if the same problem will occur.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

    Hi Sukie,

Thank you for your quick response.

    Here are my answers ;

    1. May I know if only this file has this problem? You can create a new file to check if the same problem will occur.

[Haydar] : I have created several new files with the same principle and all of them have the same problem.

    2. May I know if this problem also occurs on Teams Online? Could you also provide the version of Microsoft Teams? You can click your avatar in your Teams > About > Version and provide the screenshot of your Teams.

[Haydar] : I have tried Teams Online and the problem continues.

These two Teams versions are having the same problem :

    1. You can also upload this file to OneDrive for business directly and open it in Excel Online to check if the same problem will occur.

[Haydar] : I tried this method, same problem occurs.

If so, we have tested it on our side, we went to Excel client and created a table with data validation drop-down list, then we uploaded this file to Microsoft Teams, then we opened it and selected value from data validation drop-down list,

[Haydar] : The screenshot you have sent doesn't seem to be a table, it is a normal range I guess. To test my situation, you must first create a table by "Home >> Format as Table". Can you please try again with a Table ?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi HaydarMuradoglu,

We appreciate that you posted back and shared the detailed information with us. We also appreciate that you spent your precious time doing those tests.

We have read your description carefully, and it seems that you have tried uploading file to OneDrive for business and using Teams Online, the same problem still persists. And you have also created several new files, the same problem still persists.

Given this situation, we have also tested it again on our side, we formatted it as table, then we tried the same steps above and we still cannot reproduce the same situation as yours.

Since you have tried most of possible ways and same problem still persists, given this situation, this issue may be also related to your Excel client, to narrow down this issue, we will send a simple file to you via private message, you can upload it to Teams to check if the same problem will occur. If the same problem didn’t occur, this issue may be related to your Excel client.

Please click on the link below to access your private message: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/privatemessage/inbox.

At the same time, if it is convenient to you, could you provide the product information and version of your Excel? You can go to Excel > File > Account and provide the screenshot of it. As shown below:

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

    Hi Sukie,

Unfortunately, same problem occurs with your sample file also.

I have sent a screen recording video via private message about this problem. In this screen recording video, I tried to explain the problem step-by-step in a detailed way. I hope it will help you better to reproduce the problem in your side.

    Best regards,

    Haydar

    Hi HaydarMuradoglu,

Thank you for posting back and provided detailed video about the situation you encountered in private message.

We have also tested it again according to the video you provided, and we found if we selected date under drop down list under table, it will only keep the format of date, however, table in this file will not automatically expand and border stays there, as shown below:

However, if we manually typed date, table in this file will automatically expand.

At the same time, we have also upload this file to OneDrive for business and opened it in Excel Online and we found that we can still encountered the same situation. It seems that we can reproduce the same situation as yours. Given this situation, I do understand the inconvenience it has made and apologize for it. Since this issue only occurs on Excel Online and it works fine in Excel client, so this issue may be related to Excel Online and may need to be checked from background, the best way to troubleshoot the issue is to report the issue to the related Team. I have sent you a Private Message, please click on the link for more information on this issue. We also want to report this issue directly to the related team. However, we don’t have specific escalate channel to report this issue. As the side of Office 365 admin have access to report this issue to the related team, this is why we’d suggest you open a ticket directly. This is the best way and fast way to solve this issue.

In the meantime, for a workaround, we’d suggest you use Excel client to edit your file temporarily. Or you can copy the date from table and paste into the new cell below, then you can re-select date in the list and it will automatically expand.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie
