Problem - Excel under Android 10

Following a recent upgrade of my phone from Android 9 to Android 10, Excel has ceased to work properly. Randomly, some workbooks fail to open, with an error message saying I should open it on a PC. When I do, I get another warning message, saying I might lose data on the "recovery". I don't seem to lose data, I can open and save the file on the PC, and return it to my phone, where it opens normally until the problem recurs. Workbooks used to open perfectly under Android 9. Does Excel need some small adjustment to run properly under Android 10?

    Hi Efskeff!

Thank you for posting the screenshots. We appreciate it a lot.

One main reason behind getting this error when opening the excel file on your PC is system file corruption. Try to repair the corrupted Excel workbook and see if it helps recover the file.

Here's a link that shows how to repair a corrupted workbook.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/repa...

Another method is to right-click the file. In the drop-down menu click "Properties." If "Read Only" is checked, click on it to uncheck it.

You can also try recovering the data by making the Excel workbook read-only. Open Excel workbook in ‘read-only’ mode > try copying its entire contents. Now create a new workbook > paste the entire contents from the corrupted file to the new file.

If the problem is still unresolved after doing the above methods, here's a link that might help you fix the problem. You may try the suggestions mentioned here.

On the other hand, on your android device, please check if you have the latest excel version installed on your mobile. If there are any updates available, I suggest you install the latest updates. Also, could you please confirm if you're opening the excel file through one drive on your mobile?

    I hope this information helps.

If you have any questions, please let me know and I'd be glad to assist you further.

    Thank you and Best Regards!

    Jen :)

Thanks, Jen! I did try reinstalling Excel, but the problem recurred. I don't accept that my file is too difficult for Android Excel, because it and many others always opened perfectly in Android 9. It did not open without problems on my PC, but stopped with a warning that there was a problem, an offer for Excel (PC) to fix it, and a warning that I might lose data. It is as if Excel under Android 10 damages files so they cannot be opened, and have to be fixed by Excel under Windows 10. I don't expect an upgrade of my OS to lead to a reduction in functionality of my apps!

Hello Efskeff ! I'm Jen, an independent advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I'd be happy to help you out with this issue.

The Android version of Excel has limited capabilities. It might be that this file in question has some functionalities on that spreadsheet that cannot be handled by the Android App version. Since you were able to open the spreadsheet on your PC, it means that there's no problem with the file itself. I suggest you try re-installing the Excel app on your Android 10. If that does not resolve the issue, you may need to check the spreadsheet for non-supported functionality on the Android App.

    I hope this information helps.

If you have any questions, please let me know and I'd be glad to assist you further.

    Thank you and Best Regards!

    Jen :)
