Sheet views

We have a massive shared speadsheet at work and we use sheet views while sharing it.

Everyday we have someone unable to enter data through sheet views getting this mesage. My understanding is that if I try to input in sheet views, my last row will autoatically feed the last row in the main view. Is this correct?

I have been able to input data in the past, but sometimes I get this message "We can't do that in sheet views", what may be causing this problem? Is it the filters? Can data not be input with filters? Altough I just tried clearing the filters and I still get the error.

Please help. This is driving us all crazy!

    Hi Ivy,

We have been creating new sheet views when the error shows up, it usually appears after a couple of days.

Do you think the file may be corrupt? Would it be enought with creating a copy of the file and replace the original with a copy? Copying the contents into a new file sounds like a pain! We have pivot tables for reporting and we have put so much time into it.

    Any other ideas?

Thanks for you help so far.

    Liz

    Hi Lisbeth,

Thanks for writing back and letting us know the more information.

Generally, the Sheet views are implemented to make the shared users to work easily without any interruption from the others. But it doesn’t mean that the Sheet views are not for co-authoring, even the users can work together on the particular view created in the worksheet.

Since you already tried to create a new view in the problematic sheet and encounter the same problem, we assume the problem should be specific to the worksheet. In this scenario, can you try to create a new worksheet and copy the content from the problematic worksheet to new worksheet for checking the behavior when working with the sheet views?

From my experience and search, there is no general limitation that could not be done in the sheet view, and I can normally delete or insert the rows in the sheet views without the problem.

Appreciate your patience and stay safe. 😊

    Best Regards,

    Ivy

    Thank you, Higgins.

We only have 16 sheet views in total for that sheet. In the past, creating a new sheet view seemed to work, but I have just tried and it shows the same error. It's as if there was a problem with the table continuing to copy the format from sheet views.  If I select for example the row after the last. Then it works, but unfortunately that means I would be inputting data outside of the table area (in the gridlines)  and this is what is happening. Since people are not able to use the last table row, they are skipping one and data is being input outside of the table which messes up formulas and pivot tables.

I read the article you attached, do you have anything related as to things that cannot be done in sheet view? So far I know rows cannot be inserted or deleted from sheet view, but maybe there is something else?

    Hi Lisbeth,

Thanks for sharing your experience here and we will try our best to help you.

According to your description, we did a test on our side but unfortunately, we can't reproduce your issue.

To narrow down this issue, could you please create a new workbook to check the result.

Besides, we noticed that the maximum number of sheet views you can make is 256 per sheet. May I confirm that what view you have created? You can check it via clicking on the top-left side like that:

Please have a try and share the result with us.

    Best Regards
