Error message received when sorting Excel spreadsheet even though I made all the columns the same width

I want to sort a spreadsheet by name (one of the column headers) and changed all the columns to be 27 characters wide. I still receive this error message:

To do this, all the merged cells need to be the same size.

    You have merged cells - select all your cells and un-merge them, and your sort will work fine.
