OneNote student notebook issues

In Canvas LMS, the OneNote student notebook seems to be allowing students to access the teacher's notebook--and therefore everyone can see, and edit each others' posts!--as well as create their own personal OneNote student notebook using the navigation link in the Canvas course.  Oddly, the student-created class notebooks do not allow students to actually edit these.  All they can see is a blank page.

Since this was the first attempt to use OneNote in a Canvas course, I at first inserted a "share" link into the course.  Before school started and before students had access, I realized my mistake, removed that link, and provided instructions on how to use the navigation tab to create their own student class notebook for this course.  The old link has been deleted, but it almost seems as if it is still working, since when students use the navigation tab and create their notebooks, they are enabled to edit the teacher's notebook.

Would it work to delete any notebook created for this course and start over with a newly created and linked OneNote notebook?  Since deleting a link, and provided updated instructions seemed to compound the problem, I don't want to add another layer of mayhem.

Thank you for your time and willingness to respond.

It's a strange to be with this issue:  Canvas support states that they cannot assist with OneNote issues, since OneNote is not their product...and now, it seems, that this issue can not be assisted by Microsoft support because it is a Canvas issue.

I've also contacted our department and our school's IT services--who have let me know that it is either Canvas or OneNote (depending on who specifically I speak with).

I am not saying this to cast any blame...it's just frustrating to be caught in the middle.

    Again, I appreciate your time.

    Hi Robyn MK,

I appreciate that you spent your precious time doing those and shared the updates with us. I do understand the inconvenience it has made and apologize for it.

We understand you have problems Class Notebook with Canvas LMS and since, you mention “u**sing the auto-enroll feature with the Canvas LMS” we really want to help but as we focus on dealing with the out-of-box issue of OneNote, we sincerely suggest you contact Canvas Support to investigate further. This is the quicker way to fix this issue and let your work perfectly.

The reason I ask you contact canvas support is that we have limited resources and very little knowledge about canvas and in the above-mentioned forum, you will get the most qualified pool of respondents.

I appreciate your patience and understanding.

    Best Regards

    Waqas Muhammad

Thank you so much for your response.

I did delete any notebook(s) that were associated with this class.  And, according to instructions provided by my university, created a new OneNote Class Notebook in that course.

The problem now seems to be that about half of the class (over over 100 students) is being routed to their personal OneNote notebook.  They can see the course notebook, but when they try to open it, it provides a statement that bars them from opening their course notebook.

I'm using the auto-enroll feature with the Canvas LMS, so students enrolled in the course should be able to access the course notebook with their course credentials....this doesn't seem to be the case for all.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Robyn MK,

I apologize for all the trouble it has caused and sorry about your time.

As per your description, may I know whether the issue happens in other courses and class notebooks. If the issue only happens in one notebook, I suggest you can create new one and link to class OneNote notebook. Log into https://canvas.instructure.com with the Canvas email and password>Select a course and then click Class Notebook>Click Create a class notebook and follow the process to create a class notebook.

I appreciate your patience and understanding.

    Best Regards

    Waqas Muhammad
