As Stefan has said, you are in Draft view layout. Word remembers that last layout view you were in and returns to it the next time it opens.

Looks at the bottom right corner of Word's active window. You can change to Print Layout view (the most commonly used layout) by clicking on the icon that I have circled in the screen clip.

As the others have indicated that is the end of document marker which cannot be removed. I just wanted to add that it appears in Outline View as well as Draft View.

The line in your screen shot looks like the "end of document" marker which is displayed in Draft view, at least in Word for Windows.

Which view has been specified for your document?

    Hi newxdress,

Under the Home tab, check on Borders > No Border to see if it makes any difference.

The problem may also be related to the settings after you installed Office for Mac, you can try to remove the files below to reset Word. The corresponding folder will be created automatically the next time you open Word.

    1. Close Word, open Finder.
    2. Press Command + Shift + G, input “~/Library/Containers”, move com.microsoft.Word *(*Or Microsoft Word folder in Big Sur) to desktop.
    3. Open Word, and check if it can sync documents properly.

If it remains unsolved, we would like to collect some information to further check it:

    1. Please provide the Office version and macOS version.

Office version: After opening Word client, click Word > About Microsoft Word on the menu.

macOS version: Click Apple icon > About this Mac on the menu.

    1. Do you encounter similar problems when using other Office apps like PowerPoint?

    Best regards,

    Madoc
