Pre migration report is ready ( on premsis) after generating from SMAT tool.

We have seen different reports from each category, Just few questions on this. please help me in clarifying following 2 questions

We have verified random sites to check whether any customizations, how we do make sure customization level? what are the exact check points in particular site collection/site to figure out customization is there or not. Please help me o this
How do we know whether these reports managed meta data report, master page report, checked out files report, e.t.c is compatabile with SharePoint online or not

Currently, we could only check customization on three below levels:
Migration Assessment Scan: Custom Permission Level
Migration Assessment Scan: Custom Profile Property Mappings
Migration Assessment Scan: Customized Pages
Managed metadata columns are typically migrated, however support will depend on the migration tooling you select, such as SPMT, which supports the migration of content types and term stores. During migration, the default master page should be set on all sites that are migrated.
Review the report and determine where you can move away from custom master pages before you migrate.
If you have custom master pages assigned to sites, you will need to set the Master Page property on the new site after the migration has completed. In the check out file report, only checked-in content will be migrated. To avoid any potential data loss, encourage users to check in their files prior to migration. A site administrator can check in a file for a user, however only the content that was saved to SharePoint by the user would be migrated - if a user downloaded the file and was working on it outside of SharePoint, those changes would not appear post check-in.

Thank you for the response. I have gone through articles you have shared. Can you please clarify on my below questions:

suppose we have got couple of sites in the customized master pages report, does it mean sites mentioned in this report should be set default master page after migration using designer, am I correct?

How do we set the master page property on the SharePoint online site ( new site) after migration for the customized sites? Please give an example.

Custom master page should not be migrated, meaning from custom master page report we should skip all those custom master pages from migration?
and by doing so will it migrate the content?

Post migration, how do we apply master page setting on the new site?

what can be those additional user profile property which wont be migrated, can u give me some examples?

I am not clear on what exactly supposed to do for the sites having customized pages?

so custom permissions level created in the on premises sites will not be migrated to SP online?

in the modern SharePoint online site, if there is no concept of master page ,what exactly is there in the modern online site instead of master page?

No, sites mentioned in customized master pages report should be set default master page before migration, doing this ensures that the site will render once the migration is complete as the content migration will not have a dependency on any custom master pages.

After migrate the site with default master page, if you still want to use custom master page, you need to re-deployed it in the new site, it's up to you, and you need to validate your customizations work on the new platform.

You should set the default master page on those sites have custom master pages instead of skip those site.

The same way you apply them in server site, note, these custom settings will not work in modern page.

Except the default profile mapping, if you map a profile property to an attribute in Active Directory, or use Business Connectivity Services (BCS) to populate profile property values from a database or web service, those will not be migrated since Azure ad does not support extending the Azure AD schema and configuring additional profile property mappings.

Use the default master page on those sites to replace custom master page, make sure the site will render after the migration.

Mostly, to avoid permissions errors, it is recommended that you re-create custom permission level on the new site.

Classic themes are hard to manage and using a modern tenant-controlled theme is much better.

Please help on first point (answer),

Regarding customized master pages fix on first point point you have mentioned, it seems like it worked however it seems we get an error when switching to the default master on the front page, however the other pages are rendering fine...
so we can do with front page?

& few questions, please help me in understanding these questions also. Perhaps it could be last==)
how do we take custom master page from on premisis and re-work in SharePoint online?

do we need to take CSS & JS files from on premisis & Put it in the SharePOint online site assests & style library ?

If it so can you please give some clarity on site assests & style library role? & why should place CSS & JS files only in site assest and style library?

1.What did you mean get an error when switching to the default master? Did an error occur when changing the master page under the following settings?

2.Open SharePoint online site in SharePoint designer>navigate to All files > _catalogs > masterpage, then copy and paste all the downloaded html template files like image, css, script folders and HTML file in it:

After uploading successfully, Go back to the site> site settings>select Designer manager under look and feel option>Convert an HTML file to a SharePoint master page>select you pasted HTML page and click Insert> publish the newly added master page in Design Manager:

After publishing, go to the site settings and click master pages link under look on feel, select newly added master page in site master page drop down list and click OK to apply the new master page.

Hi Wang,

Thank you very much, Please clarify my follow up questions:

We switched to default master page using SharePoint designer, is it correct way?
however I am not seeing any errors, I am not certain how it disappeared.

This one is not clear for me. Do we need to download from on premises site collection? IF yes how to download and where to download from on premises? Please help
As per your instruction I will upload in master page in Designer in SharePoint online .

I see only SP designer 2013 not SP online designer, can you please share me the link to download SharePoint online Designer link?

1.Yes, you could switch to default master page in SharePoint designer:

2.Yes, access the on-premise site in SharePoint designer, navigate to the master page folder as mentioned above, copy the custom master page with the suffix html, if you have any custom css, js folder related to the page, copy all of them, then still open the SharePoint online site in SharePoint designer 2013, paste them under the same directory.

There is no SharePoint designer online, we could open online site in SharePoint designer 2013 too.

Please click File>Account in SharePoint designer, switch account and type in the credentials of the online site you are trying to open.

Hi Wang,

Thank you for your continues support. I switched to respective account. However I am still getting showing in the attached screenshot called "error" subsequently when I clicked on OK it is giving permission error in the attached screenshot called "Capture" . So I added as site collection admin and Tried to clear the designer cache but still the access denied error. Please help on this.

1.Please go to your SharePoint online site collection site settings > SharePoint Designer Settings, make sure you enable the SharePoint Designer.

2.Remove SharePoint Designer 2013 related credentials. To do it, open Control Panel > Credential Manager > Windows Credential > Generic Credentials, then delete any items which contains MicrosoftOffice15_Data.

Try signing in with your Office 365 account again.

Thank you, It appears to be screenshot for designer settings you have shared is not appropriate.
However I don't find designer settings option under site collection settings, PFA

And what about page not found error which I shared in my previous thread. Please help here also.

as you aware we have migrated from on premises to online, we saw global navigation missing, PFA called "GNavigation" along with other issue "Page not found"

other than above 3 issues, please suggest how we can customize online search in the SharePoint online after migrating from on premises SharePoint.

I have updated the picture in the reply above, if you still not see SharePoint designer settings, please go to Microsoft admin center>SharePoint admin center>Settings>Go to the classic settings page, then turn on custom script as shown below:

Note, the custom script could take up to 24 hours for the change to take effect.

Please go to the site settings> select Navigation under look and feel to check the global navigation, if related navigations are not migrated, we suggest you re-create it.

About how to customize online search, we suggest you open a new thread for this issue.

Hi Wang,

Page not found error is when we open the SharePoint online site. I have verified all the pages in the SharePoint on-premises (source) , so default page is the one we saw in the SharePoint online ( destination )site giving this page not found error.
when we click on some links from list showing in the below screenshot it is giving same error as page not found.

Still I am not able to see SharePoint designer settings from SharePoint site collection admin settings, I have disabled custom script from tenant and also cleared the credentials as pure your suggestion earlier. But still no luck.

Are those pages successfully migrated to SharePoint online? If not, the page not found error will appear.

We need to allow custom scripts at tenant levle, not disable it.

Hi Wang,

Yes those pages are migrated successfully, as I said before only default home page with custom web parts in the source side the same giving page not found in the destination, I verified other pages those are rendering in the online.

I enabled custom script but still the same( this is my personal tenant) I believe designer part is not showing may be license has expired. I verified my subscription is expired.

I am afraid the default homepage with the custom web part is not migrated successfully , as a workaround, replace a homepage for the site.

and second question is coming to our old topic regarding master page issue.. Development team set default master page as default in on premises and followed by what ever steps u mentioned regarding copying master page from designer with html & pasted them in the online, but looks like developers have not used SharePoint designer in the whole process to fix master page and global navigation instead they might have done it from site settings/site content . so what I got to know from developer is Master page reflecting in the site settings but not from site contents.

& one more point to add which I got to know from developer is, in our environment we don't have html page and what further developers said is master pages migrated automatically no need to download and upload, and fix the links manually for the master page once migration is done. This is what developer said.

Please suggest what mistake developers must have done?
I hope I have conveyed what is the problem, Please suggest
