Styles not saving

Using MS Word 365 - have updated styles numerous times only to find the changes not sticking.  Have tried the "auto update" with it on and with it off, neither works.  I have even updated it in my normal document template and extracted the style to my new document - doesn't work this way either.  This is so frustrating as every time I open the document I have to modify the style only to have to do it every single time.  Anyone have a solution?  Thank you, PCrockett in Texas

There are two "auto update" gotchas in styles.

  1. The first is in the style definition itself. In general you want that not checked.
  2. The second is a document setting. In the Developer tab, click on Document Template. If a box is checked to update styles from the template, uncheck it.

    Hi PCrockett,

Thanks for posting in the community.

According to your description, I would like to collect some information.

    1. For the “AutoSave” feature, it will autosave the content including the styles you set to the content. Do you mean the changes cannot be saved? If so, does the issue exist in a specific document or other documents? You could create a new document to test.
    2. For “…to my new document - doesn't work this way either”, do you mean even the Styles you created hasn’t been saved? Please click the button and open the Styles box to check.

    1. Your Office version

Click File> Account, take a screenshot including Product Information and About Word.

If my understanding conflicts your meaning, please point out and let me know.

    Regards,

    George
