Custom Table Formats Not Working?

When I specify formats for the first or last column of a table, portions of the formatting do not get applied when I use the format....

Specifically, I am trying to set a different background fill colors to the first and last columns of a table (not necessarily same colors for both). The preview looks as I intend; however, the style representation in the toolbar and the tables to which I apply the formats do not show the desired formats. Meanwhile, the header row and the stripe formats do get applied.

Is there something I don't understand about the "first/last column"?
