why isn't the excel F4 repeat function working?

You used to be able to color or format a cell and then repeat the action and it is no longer working.  Was this taken away with Office 365?  This was the most valuable time saving action, I hope it wasn't removed.

Thank you for querying in the forum.

According to this article Keyboard shortcuts in Excel, pressing F4 alone should work for repeating the last command or action.

And I have tested in Excel in version 2103(Build 13901.20312) Current Channel from my side, F4 works fine.

For troubleshooting, you may try to open Excel application in safe mode and check if F4 works. If it works, the issue should be caused by Excel add-ins.

Besides, try to Online Repair Office and see if issue can be fixed.

If issue persists, could you please confirm information below for further troubleshooting?

1.What is the version of your Office? In Excel, please click File>Account, capture a full screenshot of Product Information from right side of the window.

2.It seems F4 used to work fine, what changes have you done before issue happens? Update Windows or Office? Or install any program on computer?

3.Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Y also repeats the last command or action, does it work for you?
