How to share document without changing Sharepoint version

I have a Word document that I need to share with a colleague. The original template is saved in our Sharepoint library. The colleague intends to edit the document to customize it for her site.

I want to provider her a version that will not save her edits to the Sharepoint version. I've disabled the autosave (under file > options > save > uncheck AutoSave OneDrive and SharePoint Online files by default. But that seems to only be changing how *my* copy of Word behaves, not actually intrinsic to the file I'm sharing. If she doesn't have the autosave turned off, it seems, it *will* autosave to Sharepoint (which is DEFINITELY what I don't want).

I don't want it to be read only... she needs to edit it. I need to send it to her in a way that allows her to edit the file without changing the Sharepoint version of the file.

Would "save as" with a different file name do that? Or is there some permission I can change in the document that will "disconnect" it from Sharepoint for local editing only?

Hi Edie,

Thank you for your post in our forum. And we will try our best to help you if we can do something.

Per your description, may I confirm whether my understanding is right, that you want to share the user a document to let her edit but you also don’t want the changes to be saved to the original document SharePoint?

If so, just as you said, we also would suggest you can let her download the original document to the local drive to save it as a copied document. That means, once she downloads the original document, the downloaded document will be the second document as saved to the local document, all changes on the copied document saved on the local drive won’t sync to the original document saved to SharePoint.

However, if my understanding doesn’t meet your requirement, you can post back, we will continue to help you find a better solution. 😊 Have a good day!

Best regards,

Cindy
