Excel Pivot Table formatting

I recently upgraded to Office 365.  In Excel, when creating a pivot table, using the pivot table style design 'none', the lines around my row fields are grey.    Before I upgraded these lines were black.  How do I change them back to black?

File created with Office 365 – grey lines

File created in an older version of Office – black lines

    Hi Crystal,

Thank you for your post in our forum, we will try our best to help you if we can do something.

Per your description, I test on my end and find your problem may be related to the Border you selected. If you select No Border and None under Design, it means the border is none, so, the cell will show the original color— grey. While if you select None under Design but with all borders, it indicates your PivotTable is None format except for All Borders. **** You can see the below screenshots.

According to Apply or remove cell borders on a worksheet and test result, you can change the border to test whether your problem persists.

Meanwhile, you also can see Change the style of your PivotTable to create a new PivotTable Style to show the black border.

Hope this can help you. However, if your problem persists with trying all ways to change the borders, we would like to collect to help you troubleshoot further.

    2. Does the problem happen to all workbooks? How about creating a new workbook to test?

    Best regards,

    Cindy

    Hi Cindy,

Thank you very much for your quick response. Unfortunately neither of the solutions you proposed solved my problem.

When using the design 'none' I've never had to add or select a border. When I tested your solution, it works when there is a one to one match of row fields, but not when there is multiples - the white space is lost:

    no border selected:

    adding all borders:

The white space under 'apples' groups the two rows (3 and 5) together.

I also tried creating a new pivot table style to replicate what I'm used to seeing with the 'none' design. I couldn't identify the table element linked to the borders I'm trying to replicate.

    Here is the product information:

This issue is occurring in all new workbooks I create. This issue is also occurring when adding new pivot tables to older workbooks.

Thank you for any further assistance you can provide.

    Hi Crystal,

Thank you for your reply. And we test more times to verify this problem based on your environment, we are so sorry to convey we can reproduce your problem. We also tried on other different channels and versions, such as Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview) Version 2008, Current Channel Version 2101 (Build 13628.20448), unluckily, finally get the same result.

You can see the below screenshot. And I have tried many methods to try to achieve your needs, but I am sorry to convey I have no idea to just change the grey to blank without changing other settings.

    Image

All I can figure out from the root settings are to change the Border Line Color to blank, just like my first reply, but when do this changes, the border line will change as well, just as your concerned point. And, if you want the white space under 'apples' to group the two rows (3 and 5) together, we think you can use Erase Border function under Border to remove the redundant border lines.

This may be a little complicated and tedious, so we also would suggest you can post your idea Excel for Windows – Welcome to Excel’s Suggestion Box! (uservoice.com) to draw the attention of the related developing team. Your insights will be seen by the related team directly and it’s the best way to submit any ideas on Office products.

Additionally, I also tried to create a new PivotTable Style, but if you want the line to be blank and look like the style of None, we think it’s difficult to achieve.

Appreciate your patience and understanding. And thank you for your time. 😊 Hope everything works out for you!

    Best regards,

    Cindy
