Multiple problems uploading to Sharepoint

HI,

I am using A Sharepoint team site for my class and have created document folders for students to upload their projects. These projects are often large and contain video files.

I am having multiple students across several classes run into issues where they upload a folder, but many of the files show zero data. So they think they have successfully uploaded, get no error message, but when I try to view the work the files don't open because they contain no actual data.

I've attached a screen shot of some recent downloads of their work, and you can see the ones that show Zero bytes.

It seems to be a common problem, not tied to a particular computer or situation. Students report the problem whether they are at home or using the University's wifi network, on both Mac and PCs.

thanks very much,

Will

    Hi Will,

Thank you for the updated information.

You mentioned that the problem happens when some students upload files from different devices to different SharePoint sites, so the problem might be related to the SharePoint in your environment, which needs to be checked from the backend. I suggest you contact the administrator in your company if you aren’t the administrator and follow the steps in the article to open a ticket, this is a most efficient way to fix the issue in your environment.

    Appreciate your understanding.

    Best regards,

    Jazlyn

    Hi Deano,

I've been checking with students, and so far everyone is using Chrome, on either a Mac or PC. I'm hoping to hear from other students and have asked these students to try other browsers. But so far no new results.

I haven't had any issues using Chrome to upload to the sites.

    thanks

    will

PS. One more student has reported in, and he uses Safari on a Mac, and is also having trouble uploading.

    Hi will

Hope you are having a wonderful day.

After reading your post I will like to ask. What browser are you students using when performing their upload task. Can you check to see if there's any connection between the students who are having this problem and the browser they are using.

    Kind regards,

    Deano

    Hi Jazlyn,

Thank you for your quick reply.

    To answer your questions:

    1. The files are not viewable directly on the Sharepoint site, so the issue is not with downloading.
    2. It is not just video files. This problem has occurred with jpeg and other files.
    3. I have three classes, and three separate Sharepoint sites, one for each class, and the problem occurs across all three sites, from different students, uploading different types of files over different networks.
    4. We can't use the copy/move feature from OneDrive, because that method strips IPTC data from files. So our students are uploading directly. I don't know how often they use the drag/drop versus Upload button.

The Document folders I have created do have custom permissions. I created folders that allow students to upload only, but not delete or edit. That's the only change I can think I have made to the standard workflow. Attached is a screenshot of the custom permission I created, named "Upload Only."

Thanks for any help you can offer.

    best,

    will

    Hi Will,

Sorry for the inconvenience the problem caused for you.

Based on your description, we understand that some of your students are encountering the problem while uploading the video files to the SharePoint site.

From your screenshot, some video files become Zero bytes when you download them to your local. May I confirm that whether you could view these video files directly from SharePoint Online site? Because if there is no problem from SharePoint Online, then there may be a problem during the download process.

If the problem also happens on the SharePoint Online site, to check whether the problem is related to the specific Document Library in this site, could you please create a new library to see whether the problem happens?

Generally, to upload the files to SharePoint Online, we either use the Drag/Drop feature or Upload button. Another way is to sync the Document library using OneDrive sync client and copy/paste into the SharePoint folder. May I know how your students upload files?

    Appreciate your cooperation in advance.

    Best regards,

    Jazlyn
