Hello there.

I am doing a migration of my pictures folders (270GB) to my sharepoint online using the sharepoint migration tool.

The migration is nearly finished but its showing there are some errors in the scan summery report:

File count '387046' is too large to create index

What does this mean and what does it effect?

Thank you

Hi L20,

Thank you for the reply.

So sorry that I don’t have the environment to test for this behavior using the SharePoint Migration Tool.

However, according to this article: Manage large lists and libraries - SharePoint (microsoft.com)

We noticed that the Automatic index creation when sorting in the modern experience is limited to lists and libraries with less than 20,000 items.

As you mentioned you uploaded just over 20k items to SharePoint using the migration tool, it beyond the limit. So, it caused the issue.

For your second question, based on my research, it will not impact the ability of this library to be indexed for searching on SharePoint if your items have been uploaded to SharePoint successfully.

Best Regards,

May

I have the same question. I am uploading just over 20k items to SharePoint using the migration tool, but I don't think there are very many in any particular folder / view. What are the consequences of not building an index, and what type of index is it referring to? Will this impact the ability of this library to be indexed for searching on SharePoint?

    Hi Ali_Sheikh,

So sorry for this inconvenience caused to you.

According to this article: Manage large lists and libraries - SharePoint (microsoft.com)

We noticed that SharePoint lists and libraries have limit for each view, so, so may run into a list view threshold error.

Given this situation, you may make sure all views of your pictures folders (270GB) are not beyond the limit.  And you may create some new picture folders and move part of photos to these folders.

If the issue persists, may I confirm the following information for a better understanding of your situation?

    1. If your pictures folders are local folders?
    2. If you want to migrate them to a document library or a list?
    3. If you could migrate a small size picture folder to SharePoint online using the tool?

    Best Regards,

    May
