Sorting by newest to oldest dates

I am in an xlsx file (MS Excel for Office 365) and trying to sort dates from newest to oldest in a table. I highlight my data and then select the Data tab, and in the Sort & Filter group, I select Sort. In the Sort dialog box, under Column, I selected the Sort by drop-down menu and I select "Last Claim Received Date" which is one of my headers. Under the Sort On column I select Cell Values. But when I go to the Order column, I don't see the sort option from newest to oldest. All I am seeing is the options "A to Z", "Z to A" or "Custom List".

How can I get this data in the table to sort all entries in each line by the header Last Claim Received Date?

If you want to sort in date order the data has to be recognized by Excel as date format. When you see the A to Z sort option, that is for text.  Hence, you data is not being recognized by Excel as dates.

Trouble shoot- Sorting Dates and Times

One of the strong features of Excel is its ability to sort information in a worksheet. When it doesn’t sort information as you expect, however, it can be confusing. Here’s a look at why your dates and times might not sort the way you want them to.

If you receive a sheet with some dates, now you want to Convert these dates to serial numbers as below screenshot shown, how can you quickly solve it? Here I have some ways can do you a nice favor.

@ Convert date format between European and US in Excel?

    https://www.extendoffice.com/documents/excel/4162-excel-convert-european-date-to-us-date.html

If you work in an international company, you will receive sheets from different counties every day which may record dates with different date formats. For example, the European counties record dates in the date format dd/mm/yyyy, while US record dates in the date format mm/dd/yyyy. In this case, how can you quickly convert the date format between European countries and US in Excel?

.  *  Convert texted date from European dd/mm/yyyy to US mm/dd/yyyy with formula

.  *  Convert date format between European and US with Format Cells

Have you ever come across a scenario where your dates in Excel are in the wrong format?

Say you type in 01/05/2018 which actually means January 5, 2018 in the US but it shows as May 1, 2018!  It drives me nuts because the entire spreadsheet of dates is interpreted incorrectly by Excel!

That happens because your computer’s region settings are in UK format and need to be changed to a US format.
