Microsoft Visual Basic Unexpected Error 50001

Hi,

I just bought a new Mac, and migrated my files and system over from my old computer. Since I moved everything over I keep getting a pop-up box that says "Microsoft Visual Basic Unexpected Error 50001" whenever I open or close Microsoft Word. It does not seem to effect the other programs in my Microsoft suite, and does not impede my use of Word.

I found someone else asking about this same error message, but when I followed the instructions provided to solve their issue, the same steps did not work for me. I would greatly appreciate your help in solving this matter.

Thank you!

It sounds like your Normal.dotm file contains a macro. Please try these steps:

    1. Close Word.
    2. While holding down the Option key, click on the Go menu in the macOS menu bar and choose Library. Your hidden user Library folder opens.
    3. Open ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates.
    4. Drag Normal.dotm to your desktop.
    5. Restart Word, then close it. A new blank Normal.dotm is created. The problem should disappear.

If your Normal.dotm contained custom styles, AutoText or macros, use Tools>Templates and Add-ins>Organizer to copy them from your old Normal.dotm to the new one. Be cautious about copying macros, as that's what caused the problem.

    Hi Kelsey,

Please try stating your mac in safe mode and check if Word app opens without the error. Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. To know how to start mac in safe mode, see Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Disclaimer: Microsoft provides no assurances and/or warranties, implied or otherwise, and is not responsible for the information you receive from the third-party linked sites or any support related to technology.

If the issue does not happen when your Mac is started in safe mode, try restarting without pressing any keys. If the issue does not come back in normal mode, it was probably caused by a cache or directory issue with your startup disk, which safe mode fixed.

If the issue persists, please provide the following information:

    1. Please confirm the version and build of Word for mac. To get this information, open Word, go to the Word menu and choose About Word.
    2. Are you experiencing this issue with new Word documents as well as existing docs?
    3. May I know your OS version? From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. You'll see the macOS name, such as macOS Catalina, followed by its version number.

    Let us know the status.

    Regards,

    Neha
