JoC61 --

Your problem is caused by storing your projects in SharePoint. There are certain features in Microsoft Project that simply do not work for projects that are stored in either SharePoint or OneDrive. Features that do not work include, but are not limited to:

  1. Using a shared resource pool file
  2. Creating and using a master project
  3. Setting cross-project dependencies

I am sorry to deliver the bad news, but the only way to resolve this problem is to store the project files in a network folder or on your laptop. Hope this helps.

    Hi JoC61,

    Thanks for posting back.

I could understand your concern. I sincerely recommend sharing your valuable feedback via File>Feedback within Project. This is the best way to let the developers know your requirements and suggestions and help to improve the product.

In addition, I also did a simple test from my side to use Project files that are saved in OneDrive sync folder in file explorer. I can insert subproject. Below is my test.

    Best regards,

    Tina

Really appreciate the replies but it does highlight a major shortcoming of MS Project if it cannot do these important things across another MS platform such as Sharepoint.

The follow up question i would have is that does it work if the onedrive files are also "always" available on a local drive and the link is done there?

    Hi JoC61,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

According to your description, it seems like the error appears when you try to link subprojects in Project.

To better understand the scenario and help you troubleshoot the issue, could you please confirm information below?

1.You mentioned " both projects are stored on SharePoint, local server", are they saved in SharePoint server or SharePoint Online?

2.Are you using Project desktop application and then get the error message? If yes, could you let us know your Project app version? Please go to File>Account, capture  a screenshot of Product Information, as shown below.

3.If you create project files and save them to local drive of your computer, when you try to link projects, does the error still appear?

Many thanks for your patience and effort.

    Best regards,

    Tina
