    Hello, Rebecca:

I very much appreciate your detailed answer.  Unfortunately, I could not solve the problem, even with your suggestions.

Your understanding was correct.  My colleague and I developed a narrated slide show.  But, as we live over a thousand miles apart, we could not get together.  We were able to work on the same presentation by each recording on different slides.  However, all of his slides do not show the speaker icon when we play the PowerPoint presentation as a slide show.  My slides do show the speaker icon.  We are completely puzzled as to why this should be.

If you are willing, I can send you a single slide of his that doesn’t show the icon when the presentation is a slide show.  It is not that big a problem as we initially thought as people can pause the slide show by typing “S”  and start the show again by typing “S”.  But it would be nice to understand what is happening.

    All the best,

    Sefton Boyars

    Hi!

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

If I understand what you mean your problem is the speaker icon is not displayed in some narrative slide shows. If I understand anything wrong, please feel free to correct me.

May I ask you whether the sound can be played automatically but there is no small speaker display, or the sound cannot be played and there is no small speaker display?

If the first one, it may be that you have hidden the speaker icon, you can try the following solutions.

The audio speaker in the PPT is set to play and hide, and you can see the speaker logo in the editing interface. If the speaker cannot be viewed in the editing interface, it is placed at the bottom of other elements and is covered. You can select all the elements in the slide, and then drag the top element away to see the speaker. The specific setting method is as follows:

    1. In the opened PPT, click the slide show button.
    2. In the slide show interface that appears, exit the slide when you hear a sound, and at the same time, you can confirm that the sound file is in this slide.
    3. At the same time, the corresponding speaker logo is not seen in the slide, you can use the left mouse button to select all the contents of the slide. At this point, you can see that all hidden or obscured elements on the page are displayed.
    4. Use the left mouse button to drag the other signs one by one, then you can see the hidden and covered sound horn signs.
    5. Double-click the speaker icon, and uncheck the option to hide the speaker during playback.
    6. At the same time, select the speaker logo, right-click, and select Place to top.
    7. At this time, move and position other elements in the slide, and you can see that the speaker has been displayed.

Please let us know if there's anything else that we can help you with.

    Best Regards
