Moving OneNote files from Windows to Mac

Hi there,

I moved all of my OneNote files from my Surface Pro 4 into OneDrive as .onepkg files, and I tried opening these up in my Mac. I was able to open it up but not all of the folders would sync properly, and would say that the content is not yet available.

So then I tried re-uploading all of my files into a different folder in OneDrive and it is simply not showing the files on my Mac's side when I try and import them into my OneNote, but I can see them and download them back onto my Surface Pro 4, so I know they are there and working in OneDrive but for some reason they aren't visible on the Mac.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi Sammyeu,

OneNote package *. onepkg, this format can only be opened with OneNote app (aka OneNote 2016) on Windows, OneNote for mac does not support this format.

May I know how you moved *. Onepkg from Windows to OneDrive? OneNote has its sync mechanism. No matter what version of OneNote you use, your notebooks are designed to be saved and synced automatically by the OneNote app themselves, which means you should never manually move files like you might be used to with traditional files in File Explorer on a Windows PC or in a Finder window on a Mac.

If you want to move the notebooks to OneDrive that are stored on your local computer on Windows, you must do this from within OneNote app.

  1. In Windows computer, open OneNote app (aka OneNote 2016), open the notebook that you want to move.
  2. Select File > Share.
  3. Select a OneDrive location for your notebook or select Add a Place.
  4. Enter a name for your notebook (if you like, you can keep the name it already has), and then select Move Notebook.
  5. After you see the location in the list, select it.

In case your notebook was stored in a different account, and you wish to move the notebook to another account, follow the steps from the following thread:

Move an offline Onenote notebook from a deleted account to the a new - Microsoft Community

Once you move the notebook in the proper way, open the notebook in browser to confirm if they can open properly. Once you have confirmed this, try opening the notebook in OneNote for mac app.

If you need any help, please let me know, I will try my best to help.

Regards,

Neha
