I have attempted to create an XML mapping template in Excel, however I keep getting a "Cannot save or export XML data. The XML maps in this workbook at not exportable".

How do I narrow down where the issue is or figure out what I need to fix?

    Hi Brian,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

From your description, it seems that you are trying creating XML mapping template and encountered an error message.

May I know if my understanding is right? If so, for the situation you encountered, we do understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

And according to the error message you provided, we have also searched a lot, and someone mentioned rearranged the columns in sheet to be the same as the order of elements in the schema then export became successful. For your reference: excel: Cannot save or export xml data. The xml map in this workbook are not exportable - Stack Overflow

At the same time, to better understand your situation and narrow down this issue, could you also provide the information below?

    1. Could you provide the product information and version of your Excel? You can go to Excel > File > Account and provide the full screenshot of it.
    2. May I know if all XML codes have the same problem? You can create a new file with simple XML code to check if the same problem will occur.
    3. Could you provide the screenshot of error message?

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

    Sukie,

    Thanks for your email.

I am using Excel Microsoft 365 Enterprise.

I can import the XML fomatted file....but as soon as I try to Export the exact same thing I get this error.

I'm a bit confused how it can be out of order as I'm importing in the same order.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Brian,

We appreciate that you posted back and confirmed the scenario with us. We also appreciate that you spent your precious time doing those tests.

Since you mentioned you can import the XML formatted file, but when you export the same XML, it will appear this error message.

If so, we may assume this issue may be related to Excel client, if all XML codes have the same problem and we will give you some suggestions below and hope that will help you:

    1. We’d suggest you refer to this article: Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps to achieve the latest version of Office. Then you can suggest that co-worker update Office to the latest version to check if the same problem will occur.
    2. You can open your Excel in safe mode to check if the same problem will occur. It will help in identifying an add-in or extension that may be causing a problem on startup. As steps shown below: Right-click the Start button (lower-left corner) in Windows, and click Run.> In the Run box, type one of the command: excel /safe
    3. You can use Online Repair to fix the Office application. Repair an Office application. This will reset all Office settings.

At the same time, if it is convenient to you, to do more tests on our side, we also want to confirm the information below:

    1. If it is convenient to you, we want to collect XML file with you then test it on our side, you can upload the file to OneDrive for business then share anonymous link with us.
    2. Could you also provide the version of your Excel? You can go to Excel > File > Account and provide the screenshot of version.

Thank you for your patience so far.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

    Thank you again Sukie.

I finally got the issue fixed. Just one other thing I was hoping you could help with. When I export the Excel file to XML, each XML line is starting with ns1:

Do you know how I can prevent this from being added on each XML line?

    Thank you

    Brian

    Hi Brian,

Thank you for posting back again and sharing your test results.

On the one hand, it seems that you have solved the issue, if so, we’re glad to hear that.

On the other hand, for another problem which is related to that each XML line is starting with ns1:, we have also tested it on our side, we created a new Excel file, then imported the XML file and mapped it, after then we exported the file as XML file, then we opened it with Notepad and it didn’t show any ns1:, as shown below:

Given this situation, to do more tests on our side, we want to collect the file with you then test it on our side to check if we can reproduce the same situation. You can upload the file via this link, then we can test it on our side.

At the same time, could you provide the screenshot of xml file on your side? May I know if you are using Notepad to open xml file?

Thank you for your understanding again.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie
