SharePoint not updating two-factor authentication number

Hello everyone,

I have encountered a problem with an employee that received a SharePoint link. When she clicks on the link, it asks for her email as per normal. However, when it comes to the two-factor authentication page, the number listed isn't the right one and there doesn't seem to be the normal text for alternate ways of logging in. I am the sysadmin for the firm, so we reset her password, make sure her current number was right in the apps Microsoft Office apps suite and even opened her empty SharePoint to make sure she could get into the app. However, when we click on the link it still hasn't updated the number.

Any help would be highly appreciated. This link comes from a trusted source.

    Hi Jordan Wallin:

Based on your descriotion, we would like to check how you set the two-factor authentication for SharePoint Online. Do you refer to the steps in this article for setting:SharePoint Online - O365: Set up Multi-Factor Authentication - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki (microsoft.com)

If so, since there are many options you can choose s to complete the Multi-factor Authentication verification, we would like to know which one didi you choose.

    • Text Message: A verification code is sent as a text message to the user’s registered mobile to complete the verification
    • Phone Call: User gets a phone call asking to verify the login process by pressing the ‘#’ button.
    • Verification Code sent to Mobile App: Once the Azure Authenticator App is installed, the user gets a verification code to the mobile app during the login process using which they have to complete the verification step.
    • Mobile App Notification: Users receive a notification in the mobile app asking them to complete the verification step by selecting the ‘Verify’ button in the app.

As you metioned that the uses received a SharePoint link, does it mean that you share the SharePoint file with her as a link or give her permission to enter the SharePoint site? If you are sharing a file, you can choose anyone to open it when sharing, and no authentication information will appear. Ref:Share SharePoint files or folders (microsoft.com)

If you are giving permission to enter the Sharepoint site, you can try to disable the two factor authentication from single user.

Go to Microsoft 365 admin center -> Users -> Active users -> Select the user -> Manage multifactor authentication -> Select the user -> Disable multi-factor authentication.

Ref:How to disable the two factor authentication from single user. - Microsoft Q&A

We appreciate your understanding that sometimes the initial suggestions may not resolve the problem very soon. However, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation.

    Hope this will help you.

    Tin
