Saved Word Documents are Unreadable

I work on a desktop with Word in Windows 10. Problem started a few weeks ago. When I open a saved document it

is not readable because it opens as little boxes and symbols. Is there a way to save documents to prevent this from happening?

    Where are you saving the documents? If there were saved to OneDrive, right click on the file in OneDrive and then on Version History and see if you can open and earlier version of the document.
