Microsoft word application on Mac unexpectedly stoped responding while I was finishing an 11 page assignment. The assignment has been saved before but I have added more to the document since the last save.

The cursor is always “loading” when I hover over the word document. I can’t select anything or scroll through the document.

If I force quit can I recover my unsaved work? PLEASE HELP

    Hi Melissa233,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

From your description, it seems that your Word stopped responding after editing 11 pages document, and you cannot select anything.

If my understanding is right, for the situation you encountered, we do understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it. And we still want to give you suggestions below and hope that will help you:

    1. If you saved the file in the OneDrive Online, you can go to OneDrive Online to check if those changes have been synced to OneDrive online, if those changes have been synced to OneDrive Online, you can force quit Word, then you can open Word document from OneDrive into Word application on Mac to check if the same problem will occur.
    2. If you saved the file on the local, although we have AutoRecover feature, generally, you can also go to /Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery to check if you can find the other versions of file. For your reference: Recover files in Office for Mac, however, we may not make sure that you can recover all contents which is not saved successfully, so the best way we can think of is to wait for Word.

If you have tried the suggestions above and Word still cannot respond, we’re afraid that the contents your documents would be lost. We’re sorry about it, in the meantime, to avoid this situation in the further, we’d suggest you enable AutoSave to save files to OneDrive for business. In OneDrive for business, and it will keep saving changes for each several seconds.

At the same time, we will also keep this thread open to check if the other community members who has any suggestions, welcome the other community members who has any suggestion share your suggestions here.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Best Regards,

    Sukie
