Sharepoint documents are not opening in desktop app

Hi,

I am not able to open word, excel in desktop app. File always opens in .txt notepad app. Please advise.

Based on your description, we understand that you cannot open files in desktop app, we would like confirm whether you click the option in following picture:

Please check if there are any updates of Office. You can update your Office applications in the following ways: Open Excel -> File -> Account ->Update Options ->Update Now.

If your Office has been updated to the latest version, you can also try the following methods:

Repairing Office from the Control Panel:

Go to Control Panel -> Programs -> right-click on Office applications’ icon -> Change -> Online Repair.

If the problem persists, please provide the following information to help us understand the problem more specifically:

• Screenshot of the version information of the Word you are using. (Open Word->File->Account)
• Do other file libraries have the same problem？
• Does the file stored in OneDrive have the same problem?

Hello Tin,

I have followed your instructions.

1. Open -> Open in app = Result is same error as shown above
2. I have Updated word app = Result is same error as shown above
3. Repaired the office app (Quick repair and also online repair) = Result is same error as shown above
4. First i opened file in browser, then tried to open through app, edit->open in desktop app = Result is same as shown above
5. Tried to open files stored on one drive-file explorer view. They open normally in desktop app. I tried to open the same file from SharePoint, they does not open.

The problem still persists.

This problem is not just for word files, even excel, PowerPoint files are opening in notepad when I open I try to open them in SharePoint, through open->open in app.

Thanks for coming bank and provide more information.

We noticed that you`re using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016, which is different from Microsoft 365.

In that case, please click open, through the navigation bar on the left, find the file path, click on the file to open to see if there is still an error.

If the problem persists, I suggest you try to switch to the Microsoft 365 version to check the results.
