OneNote - Excel Spreadsheet Insert not working

First noticed a few days ago that when I updated an Excel Spreadsheet embeded in OneNote it was not being saved with the changes.

Now I'm unable to insert a new Excel sheet or or an existing one in any page in OneNote,

Have been using this OneNote capability for years and years and just love it.

Does not work any any current Notebooks.

Can't tell when exactly it started happening but is is recent - very recent.

  1. I am using OneNote desktop app (formerly known as OneNote 2016)
  2. Closing and reopening did not help. Got a prompt to clear the OneNote cache - did that and lost all the the NoteBooks in the app.
  3. Then painstakingly re-opened the notebooks (yes I live in the OneNote world almost exclusively :-))
  4. The issue persisted.
  5. Then reset OneNote and started all over. Did not help!
  6. Finally, I noticed that there was a new M365 update pushed out today (9/15)
  7. This was on top of one that came out a few days ago.

This seems to have fixed the issue.

    Hi OakPark,

    May I know whether you are using OneNote for Windows 10 or OneNote desktop app (formerly known as OneNote 2016)?

    Please try closing and re-opening the notebook, check if this makes any difference. Usually closing-re-opening the notebook clears and successfully resets the connection.

    Important*: Before closing, please ensure the changes are synced successfully. If the notebooks are closed without syncing, your notes will be lost, and won’t be possible to recover them.*

    To know how to close and re-open notebook, see OneNote 2016 and OneNote for Windows 10

    After re-opening the notebook, check if you still see the same behavior.

    If the issue remains, for now till the issue is resolved, try inserting the file from OneNote for the web, see if this works or gives the same issue.  

    If the issue persists, please provide us with the following information:

    1. Are you storing the notebooks in personal OneDrive https://onedrive.live.com/ or OneDrive for business?
    2. Do you get any error? If so, please provide us with the screenshot of the error.
    3. Please confirm the OneNote version you are using.
    • If you are using OneNote, please provide the screenshot of Product Information. To get this screenshot, open OneNote on your system, click File>Account, capture the screenshot of all the information mentioned under Product Information.
    • For OneNote for Windows 10, click Settings and More (three dots) on the right-corner, select Settings>About.

    Let us know the status.
