I am trying to add a new column on sharepoint lists. The datatype would be a calculated field and I want to concatenate a few columns into this new column. However, it's not allowing me to add the columns because the data type of those columns are "Multiple lines of text". Can someone please help. Also when I am trying to change the data type from "Multiple lines of text" to "Single line of text", its not allowing me.

    Hi Anish Agarwal1,

First, my pleasure to assist you.

As per your description, please don’t worry, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation.

Based on my test result, In SharePoint online list, when we concatenate multiple columns using Calculated Column in SharePoint List, it works with “Single Line of Text” (not a Multiple lines of text).  See image below for your reference:

Basically, the column types that can be referenced in your formulas can not be” Multiple line of text”. Because created Multiple line of text” not show up when you try to create a calculated column in a list.

Since you mentioned, your columns are "Multiple lines of text" in a SharePoint list, and it seems use want to Multiple line of text field in calculated field formula.

There is a workaround that will allow you to use content from a multi-line column in a calculated column, you may try and verify the result with us.

    1.Create a single-line text column

2.Create a calculated column that copies the single-line text column contents

    3.Remove the single-line text column

4.Create a multi-line text column with the exact same name of the original single-line text column (the calculated column will still reference this name but don't modify it or the link will break)

5.Create a second calculated column and use the content of the first calculated column to do.

Regarding to you mentioned, “Also when I am trying to change the data type from "Multiple lines of text" to "Single line of text", its not allowing me.” Based on my test, when I click on “Multiple lines of text” in a SharePoint online list and select Eidt, there I can change column type to “Single Line of Text”. See image below for your reference.

Since you mentioned it does not allow you to change column type, I request. Please don’t mind could you please unload your current List column for your reference so we can understand your exact scenario and provide our suggestion in a productive manner, perhaps some related screenshots will be helpful.

I appreciate your understanding and stay safe!!

    Best regards

    Waqas Muhammad
