We have members with edit permission in SharePoint, then members can give other colleagues edit or view permission of files, but they found that they cannot remove permission under Direct Access, why? How let members remove those permission?

Hi bellsusan1,

Thank you for querying in this forum.

From your description, it seems that the members in your SharePoint site have shared some files with the others, however, when they went to Sharing > Manage Access > they cannot remove the users under Direct Access.

May I know if my understanding is right? If so, as far as we know, members in SharePoint site may not remove the permission of files. We have also tested it on our side, we went to SharePoint site and added a user as member, this member has edit permission. Then we used member’s account to share the file with the others, then we selected the file > Share > manage access > we found member cannot find the option to stop sharing, as shown below:

However, if we use owner’s account to check the Direct Access, we can see Stop Sharing options, as shown below:

And according to our test, unless we assign members Manage permission access, this member may not may not manage permission insider SharePoint document library. Generally, member with edit permission can manage lists, however, they may not manage permission of the others.

We’re sorry that it doesn’t meet your requirement. We do understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it.

To address your concern about the situation, we’d suggest you go to SharePoint UserVoice to provide your feedback. This is the best platform to let us hear from you and make our products and services better for you and others.

Thank you for your understanding. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

Best Regards,

Sukie
