Couldn't start Files on Demand

Good evening,

After reinstalling Windows 11 (build: 22000.526) yes a beta, OneDrive no longer syncs my files. When it tries to load I get an error

Couldn't start Files on Demand

Please restart your computer and try again. Error codes: 0x801f000f

If I disable Files on Demand, it will run, however, it will not actually sync.

Again, I realize I am running a beta version of Windows, but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this before, or currently and if they have any ideas how to fix it.

Thanks.

Hello,

I was able to resolve the issue. When I reinstalled windows, I moved my OneDrive folder to a drive that was formatted as exFat. However, OneDrive requires NTFS. So I was able to format the drive as NTFS and it is now working properly. So improved error messaging on OneDrive is clearly needed!

Thanks,

Jeff

    Hi Alloveru,

Thanks for sharing the solution with the community, I am sure this will help other community members who have the same issue. I agree the error in OneDrive sync app was confusing and this is the reason I could not diagnose the root cause; I apologize for the confusion. Anyway, I am really glad that the issue is resolved, and everything is back to normal.

Should you need help with another issue, please feel free to create a new post in the forum.

    Kind regards,

    Neha

    Hi Alloveru,

Since you are using Windows 11 beta version, we do not have the environment to test on our side. Sorry for not being able to help here. In this situation, the best option will be to send the feedback to the related team from OneDrive sync app (click OneDrive icon on system try, select Help & Settings>Send Feedback), so the team is aware of the issue.

Thank you for your co-operation and understanding.

    Kind regards,

    Neha

    Hi Neha,

    Thanks for your prompt response.

I did find that article earlier in my research in the problem, and tried all the steps however, it had the same result. I am running the latest OneDrive 22.002.0103.0004, I have tried using one of the ring versions as well.

I should note, that when I am setting up my OneDrive, I am selecting the same folder as I had used that contains approximately 100GB of data. I have also tried selecting a fresh folder. It is my OneDrive for business. (I am the owner of the business, and the admin for it)

Either way I try running it (using the existing folder, or new folder), when Files on Demand isn't selected, OneDrive will look for files to be processed, in my case it appears that 147,747 files need to be processed, but it just stops there, doesn't actually process them. I have left that for several days and no changes.

Again, if I enable Files on Demand, then OneDrive just crashes, I have to reset it like in the article you mentioned.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    Hi Alloveru,

I checked on my end, but I didn’t see any similar reports in the forum. I did find an article but it as old article about Windows 10 version, so, I don’t think it is related to your case.

Anyway, please try resetting OneDrive sync client, see if this makes any difference.

Besides, please ensure your OneDrive sync client is up to date. The latest version of OneDrive is 22.002.0103.0004 (production version). Reference: OneDrive release notes

If the issue persists, please confirm the following information:

    1. May I know whether you are using personal OneDrive or OneDrive for business?
    2. Please confirm the version of OneDrive app.

    Regards,

    Neha
