Only lets me read documents even after purchasing office

I had access to the Office programs through my university and used them daily for four years. I graduated in May and recently that subscription ran out and would only let me read documents in Word. Tonight, I purchased the Office program and installed all of the apps, however I still cannot edit documents. It allowed me to create the new office account with my school email address, as that is my primary one, so I am not sure if that is causing an issue? I really don't know what to do, I paid the $69.99 but still do not have access to any of the apps. How do I fix this?

Did you sign in to activate the office software? In File > Account, click Change license button and sign in with the Microsoft account.

You might need to add an outlook.com alias to the account and use that to activate office.
