We are planning to move a sql server containing a elastic pool with 8 databases to another subsciption in another tenant. So far we have come up with these steps: Create a new subscription (TMP) in the source tenant Move the server to this new subscription (TMP) Transfer ownership of the new subscription to the destination tenant Move the server to the final destination subscription Remove the now obsolete subscription (TMP) from the destination tenant My questions are: Is this a good approach and are there any thing we need to be aware of? I suppose we need to correct the Azure Active Directory admin after the movement has completed but that is all I can think of. One of the databases does have geo replication enabled, is that something we need to address or not? What are the risks involved, will there be any downtime? What happens if there is a failure in one of the steps?

Though the tutorial talks about resource movement between regions, the process is similar for moving resources across subscriptions as well. You may experience a minor downtime during the commit phase when the database switches to the new host. I tried that today and it worked just fine. The steps were:

Create a new subscription Pay-as-you-go (temporal) in the source tenant (owner role of the new suscription granted)

Move the server and other resources to this new subscription PAYG (temporal)

Change the directory of the new subscription PAYG (temporal) to the destination tenant. Select the suscription and there will be the option to Change the directory

In the destination tenant change your role to own the moved suscription

Move the server to the final destination subscription

Remove the now obsolete subscription (TMP) from the destination tenant

Hi, that is because there are a lot of other resources in that subscription that should not be moved to the new tenant.

So, just to be completely clear, resources that are not selected will stay in the current tenant under the same subscription and the new tenant will have a new subscription with the same name and only the selected resources?

Got it now.
So, you already have an existing subscription in the destination tenant that you want to continue using. Yes, your initial plan is correct in that case.
My apologies for the confusion.

First you create a new subscription (TMP) in Source Tenant (ST)

Move SQL Resources to TMP in ST using Azure Resource Mover

Transfer ownership of TMP to Destination Tenant (DT)

Move SQL Resources back from TMP in DT using Azure Resource Mover

Delete TMP

I have just performed the exact process as described above.

Moved 1 database server with 3 databases.

It didn't take long at all, probably <30 minutes from start to finish including creating the new temporary subscription and then deleting after the move was completed.

No downtime either.

In fact it was so seamless, I would have thought it could have been an automated feature from within the Azure portal.

Have a couple of questions related to database copy / cloning. There are two options that I see: - Copy and Export.

Copy - Will copy an existing database to a new database.

Export - Will create an .bacpac file and store it into a storage account. Which can be imported as a new database.

Below are my questions: -

Are there any limitations with either of the approaches?

Is there any automation tool / script that can be used to perform these activities?

If the database sizes are huge (Let's say more than a TB), will any of these actions timeout / fail (Since the activities are happening on wire?)

You can use Powershell script or sql command to copy the db from one SQL server to another. You need to be db_owner in both SQL servers. All you need to do is run one SQL command or one Powershell command in the target SQL server.
