word 2016 has suddenly started showing all the reference data (hyperlinks,bookmarks/page references/ style references etc) and footers as style references when viewed in Edit mode. It looks as it should in READ mode
when I toggle the hide/unhide icon, they're still there (only the paragraph marks, spaces etc appear/hide).
I checked file/Options/Display and none of the boxes are checked in the hidden text section.
HELP! It's making editing a nightmare.

and easier your way too :-)
I'm glad I could help.
Changing the option "Show field codes instead of their values" at File > Options > Advanced does the same thing as pressing Alt+F9.
Thank you - actually that's quite a useful thing to know.
such a relief to feel in control (well nearly!)
I also found it in File/options/ advanced/ show document content
The field 'show field codes instead of their values' was checked, so i unchecked it.
