Changing paragraph and list numbering style

When using auto-numbering of lists and paragraphs, I want the numbers and letters to be enclosed in parentheses like this: (1) and (2), and (3) or (a) and (b) and (c), and (i) and (ii) and (iii), etc, as appropriate – not 1) and 2) and 3) etc. - which seems to be the only option of that sort which Windows in Office 365 for the Mac offers. Is there a way to get what I want – and, if so, please explain how?. I have followed the Word instructions for changing how lists, etc. are numbered – but they don't work for me to add the initial parenthesis before the numbering character. Thanks!

On the Home tab of the ribbon, in the Paragraph group, click the drop-down arrow on the right of the Numbering button.

    Select 'Define New Number Format...'

In the resulting dialog, select 1, 2, 3 from the 'Number style' dropdown.

In the 'Number format box, make sure that you don't remove the number 1.

Click before it and insert an opening parenthesis (

Click after the number, remove the point and insert a closing parenthesis )

    Click OK.

Shauna Kelly wrote the definitive method of creating custom numbered lists. I've written the macOS version of that. This first article refers to creating numbered headings: Outline Numbering in Word for macOS - Best Practices The second article shows how to create numbered (or lettered or even bulleted) outline levels from any styles: Outline Numbering Variations - Best Practices Using this method you can create sets of numbered text levels with the numbering in a wide variety of styles, including double round brackets.
