SharePoint List Views Breaking: The specified list is invalid

Good afternoon,

This morning, I received messages from 2 separate users regarding 2 different lists. Both users were experiencing the same error. The lists operated and behaved as expected until today. Both lists were experiencing the issue on the default views.

When experiencing the error, you are not presented with controls to change the view; I had to use the settings gear > List Settings. When I click on another view, it works fine. If I create a new view based on the current broken view, I get the same error. When I create a duplicate view of the default view from scratch, it works fine. To remedy the issue temporarily, I rebuilt the view, set the new view as the default, and all is good.

Can someone explain why this is happening?

Side note: List 1 has just over 29k items, while List 2 contains just over 7.5k items. This has never caused an issue before, and after recreating the views everything works fine, leading me to believe it is not due to list size.

    Hi, CodingPlatypus,

The issue you encountered was related to service incident SP313226 Users are receiving an error that prevents access to any list with over 5,000 items via SharePoint Online which was resolved as of Monday, January 10, 2022, at 10:21 PM UTC.

More info: Affected users were seeing an error stating that the specified list was invalid.

Start time: Wednesday, December 22, 2022, at 7:18 PM UTC
End time: Monday, January 10, 2022, at 10:21 PM UTC

Please check again at your end to confirm if the issue is resolved and you can access the default view without any error.

    Regards,

    Igor

In SP online, when you exceed 5k items the functionality degrades and you'll start to see unhelpful errors like this. Views that request less than 5k items may display as normal but larger views do not. I can't explain why recreating the view resolved the issue but if you really need an answer, I"d submit a service request.

    Igor,

Thank you very much for the explanation and after accessing the previously broken views, I can confirm everything is operating as expected. I figured there was a temporary issue, and this gives me an answer to pass to the powers that be.

Have a great day, and enjoy your weekend.
