Try choosing Insert>Text Box>Draw Horizontal Text Box and draw a wider box.
Powerpoint Set as Default text box
The "Set as Default" text box saves only the font size and color and does NOT save the text box size so that every new text box is a single character width and has to be resized. Does anyone have a solution for this?

2022-02-02T14:53:46+00:00 Hello Helen,
Per the description shared, I understand the concern i.e, set as default for the text box will not retain the size, where when I check the behavior at my end I can see the similar behavior and couldn't find any options in PowerPoint to set the text box size as default. So, I request you to submit the feedback to the related developing team via app feedback in the PowerPoint app. Reference: How do I give feedback on Microsoft Office?
In addition, during the search about your requirement, I came across a similar requirement and I request you check the reply shared by the PowerPoint expert in this thread: set default Text Box size permanently (not just for the file) - Microsoft Community
Appreciate your patience and understanding. Have a good day and stay safe!!
Best Regards,
Chitrahaas

Click on Text options, then on the Text Box icon. Click on the Do not Autofit option. Then right-click on the text box border and choose Set as Default Text Box. Save the presentation.
Now, new text boxes should stay the size that you drew them.
