Sharepoint List Automatic Numbering

Good Morning!

I have been reading through multiple forum posts and how tos but can't seem to obtain success.

I am currently working on a list in SharePoint to organize pictures. I would like the Item # to automatically increase by 1 whenever a new line is added.

Is there a way to do this easily? I also feel it is important to state that while I am able to follow instructions and steps and have a good understanding of Sharepoint, I am not in the business of technology. If providing instructions, the more detail the better please.

Now that "workflow" has been discontinued - a lot of the previous forum instructions i've read to not apply anymore.

I greatly appreciate all and any help! Thank you!

    Dear Darrien,

You can use the flow (Power Automate) below to achieve your requirement.

    Uri:_api/web/lists/getbytitle('<list title>')/ItemCount

    Inputs: outputs('Send_an_HTTP_request_to_SharePoint')?['body']?['d']?['ItemCount']

    Best Regards,

    Cliff

Flow seems like overkill for someone who stated they aren't technical, and since the ID field already accomplishes the same thing, why not use that much simpler option?

And once again, it should be pointed out the response was marked as the answer by a Msft person, not the original poster:

Thank you so much for clarifying and acknowledging the details of my post. My only problem with that automatic column is that it doesn't change if a row has been deleted. This could both be beneficial or cause a problem over time. I am very grateful for your response though and will truly think about the pros and cons of that column. I have a feeling it will be more helpful, easier and accomplishing than not.

    Thank you!
