Linked Excel charts to Powerpoint resize when update and do not include complete graph any more

I paste a large number of Excel charts (linked) into a Powerpoint file to have them updated when source data or format (text, colours,...) change for the chart itself.

Just recently the linked graphs in Powerpoint looses part of the graph-data after update of the linked graph in Powerpoint.

Attached please find what happends with the current graphs when updating (loosing data in pasted graph, it is more significant when having more data in the graph) and then no issue when recreating the same graph.

The recreated graph is smaller (less wide) than the current graph??!! (attached two images of the two vesions)

This seems to have an incidence on the updated version although I can not understand why and also why the graphs have different sizes.

I have recently changed to a new PC but I use the same Windows 10 Pro.

I have a very large number of current Excel graphs link-pasted into Powerpoint as well as into Word and a huge work-load if the recreate the graphs, which seems fully unacceptable of course. I have not checked if the same issue occurs in Word.

Thank you for your assistance

    Hi Jahrl,

May I know if it is happening with a specific PowerPoint presentation? For the test purpose, please create a new PPT and then link some chart from Excel, update the data in Excel and check if the chart resizes.

Besides, please ensure your Microsoft 365 apps are fully updated, sometime updating Office fixes issue. To check version information, open any Office app, such as Excel or Word, click File>Account, check for the info mentioned under Product Information. The latest version of Current channel is 2106 (Build 14131.20332). For other channel version info, see Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps (listed by date)

If the version is not updated as mentioned in the article, please install updates and check if the issue remains. To know how to install updates, see Install Office updates.

If the issue persists,****please provide us with the following information:

    1. A screenshot of Microsoft 365 Product Information. To get this screenshot, open Word or Excel on your system, click File>Account, capture the screenshot of all the information mentioned under Product Information.
    2. Your OS version?
    3. Since when you are getting this issue? Is it after Office or Windows update?
    4. May I know how you have linked Excel chart to PPT?

    Regards,

    Neha

Hello Neha and thank you for your quick response and assistance.

I am doing a large project delivery and this is really causing a huge stop in the delivery.

I try to provide useful information below to your different subjects and then responses to your 4 questions.

YOU: May I know if it is happening with a specific PowerPoint presentation? For the test purpose, please create a new PPT and then link some chart from Excel, update the data in Excel and check if the chart resizes.

    I had already done this.

I do this for both Powerpoint and Word.

Below I have done it again and I show you in Powerpoint

    1. the original chart and then
    2. the original chart updated and then (=PROBLEM)
    3. the recreated chart and then
    4. the recreated chart updated (=NO PROBLEM)

Then I checked the same process pasted into Word

(I copy complete A4 pages even when only top page data).

YOU: Besides, please ensure your Microsoft 365 apps are fully updated, sometime updating Office fixes issue.

It seems like my Office built is the last version as equal to your mentioned versions (and also in the Product info screen shot in the responses to your questions).

    INFO/RESPONSES TO YOUR LISTED QUESTIONS:

    1. A screenshot of Microsoft 365 Product Information.

    2. Your OS version?

    Edition Windows 10 Pro

    Version 21H1

    Installed on ‎06/‎07/‎2021

    OS build 19043.1110

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3530.0

    3. Since when you are getting this issue? Is it after Office or Windows update?

    • I have changed PC a couple of weeks ago and I was working on all these files before without problems (Excel files / PPT and Word files).
    • The above Windows 10 Pro installation was done with the new PC, as indicated above on 06/July/2021.
    • I have worked on these files with the new PC but I had not done theses copy/paste (linked) actions and I think I have not used the feature and thus I can not say if this issue occurred with the new PC setup.
    • However, I just recently made a Windows update and can not say if the current built was updated or original W10 Pro version.
    • I think I have done an update but I am not sure as I also installed Office with the new PC thus rather the latest version.

    4. May I know how you have linked Excel chart to PPT?

Copy then Paste linked with the only choice I get, "Microsoft Excel Chart object" as shown in below screen-print.

Thank you in beforehand for your assistance.

    Hi Jahrl,

Thanks for the video and Excel workbook, it was helpful.

I tested with the workbook, and I experienced the same thing when the chart updated, it did resize in PPT cutting some of the values in the chart.

I understand you are using Paste>Paste Special>Paste link>Microsoft Excel Chart Object to link the chart, may I suggest using Paste> Keep source formatting & link data option to link the chart?

This option keeps the chart intact without resize when the date is updated in the source. Here’s the screenshot for reference. Pease check if this fulfills your requirement.
