Hi Guys,

One of my clients used this psconfig command after installing the March 2021 CU

psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b –force –cmd –installcheck -noinstallchec

What is the use of these parameters?

–installcheck -noinstallchec

Is it the correct way of doing it?

Hi anonymous user,

This parameter is not documented and should only be used if advised by Microsoft Support. It prevents PSConfig from verifying that all machines have the appropriate binaries installed which guarantees a consistent installation base on all machines in the farm.

First of all, thanks Stefan! I am very happy that you replied to my question, a Big Fan!!

Let me give you the background..

That was a 2 servers farm, I noticed a couple of old security updates, FE, Nov 2020 security update was showing missing in one of the 2 servers.
On top of that my client installed Mrach CU 2021 in both the servers but I assume when he tried to run the PS config then it gave him an error because of the missing installation of the security updates in one of the servers. So he thought of running the psconfig command with those 2 parameters –installcheck -noinstallcheck so that it could bypass the check.

That allowed him to finish the psconfig. Besides, I also noticed he did not run the psconfig in the other server, only ran it in one server.
At the moment, the SP version is showing March 2021 Cu but in CA it is still showing installation required.

I think this is what we need to do to fix it

a) As March 2021 Cu is the later version than Nov 2020 security update, therefore, no need to individually install the binaries of the missing SU in the other server. I only need to run psconfig in the missing server where it was not run after the CU installation.
b) After running the psconfig in the missed server, if it still shows installation required, we can run get-spproduct -local in that server.

Hi anonymous user,

iif the complete March 2021 was installed then the Nov 2020 security fix should be included and it would not be possible to install it separately afterwards.
PSConfig needs to be executed on both servers.
