Cannot edit save or print files

I have ms office 365 for Mac, my subscription is current. Cannot create new word and excel documents and show edit, save, save as etc all buttons in grey and inactive mode.

    It seems that by signing off and then signing back again individually from Word and Excel the problem got resolved. In my own mind there is no rational explanation for this, except that I had updated my Mac OS recently, that may not have anything to do with it.
