Stuck in authenticator app sign in loop

My Microsoft authenticator app tells me I have to "Sign in again to your account" because "Your information may have changed" (it hasn't a far as I know), and until I do so I "won't be able to approve future notifications". When I hit "continue" I am prompted to enter my PIN, which I do. After entering my PIN I am brought back to the app locked screen. When I hit "unlock" I am again prompted to "Sign in again to your account", and the above process repeats itself.

This happened to me within the past week as well. In my case, when I hit continue, I'm prompted to send a notification to my device, and then it sits there waiting for me to approve the notification (which I seemingly couldn't do, because I'm already in a workflow for approving a notification and am the one that set this second one from a part of the app that doesn't allow me to approve notifications!).

I finally realized that hitting the phone hardware back button a couple times brought me to the home screen of the authenticator app and I could approve the second notification, there. Things seem to have stabilized, for now.

Note, however, this trick only works for the scenario where our logon server just sends a notification you have to acknowledge. If, instead, it asks you to choose the proper number on your device, that will always get into this loop.
