SharePoint Thumbnail Sizing

I've reviewed the sizing guide on SharePoint but still having challenges with thumbnails and capturing the entire image in the frame. I've tried upload 64x64, 128x128, etc. and the image is always cut off on the top and bottom when I see how the image pulls in on a news feed item. I've also tried PNG and JPG formats.

Any suggestions?
