OneNote panning not working

Hi, after using OneNote 2016 for about 4 months it suddenly broke. While using a graphic tablet (Huion tablet inspiroy h640p) and his pen, when I select from the toolbar the panning tool and then hover on to the page the tool selection changes to whatever tool was selected before the panning.

I've tried:

  • Unchecking the "automatically switch between inking, selecting, typing and panning" option but then when I try using the panning tool with the pen the page moves randomly in a really buggy way.
  • Starting OneNote in safemode
  • Changing between touch/mouse mode but nothing happens
  • Unchecking "windows ink" but then when I use the panning tool with the pen and try moving the page the hand stays "grabbed" even if I move the pen away from the tablet or even if I use the mouse.
  • Restarting the computer, changing the usb port for the tablet, updating Office and Windows, repairing, resetting and disinstalling (from the Apps and functionalities section in Windows settings) and reinstalling Office 2016 and still doesn't work.
  • Disinstalling and reinstalling the tablet's driver
  • I've tried changing Office accounts, and the problem remains
  • I've also tried using OneNote for Windows 10 and it has the same exact problem.

Some things I noticed are:

  • Before this bug appeared when I selected any pen/marker the default cursor was changed into a dot/line, now when I select any pen the cursor remains the Windows' default one.
  • When using the panning tool with the mouse the page flickers a bit
  • When trying to draw on Word with the tablet the lateral scrollbar appears and disappears very rapidly

Thanks to anybody that responds to this

    Hi,

since approx. 1 week I am observing the very same issue in OneNote using a Huion HS64 tablet: When trying to "pan" with the pen, that writing area is moving in an unpredictable way. Panning with the mouse works. I also tried everything Andrea Losi mentioned in her/his post.

I have to same issue on two different computers (one with Windows 10, the other with Windows 11) and the behaviour is pretty new (on both computers). I didn't update any Huion drivers/settings in the past days, so this behaviour might have been introduced by a recent autoamtic update of Office365/OneNote.

If anybody has found a solution for this, I'ld be highly interested in, as this new "behaviour" basically breaks my workflow with OneNote.

    Thanks.

I was in contact with Huion support. At the end they were able to reproduce the issue, but according to them, they do not have a fix for it.

Another thing I noticed and that could help is that when using the pen and touching any point of the desktop, remove the tip of the pen from the tablet, and then trying using the touchpad, the cursor appears on the last point touched by the pen.

However if I use any application, when I try moving the cursor with the touchpad, using the pen and moving the cursor to some other part of the screen, and then using again the touchpad, the cursor appears where "I left it" with the touchpad.

So in conclusion I think that OneNote and Office are not the cause of the problem but rather a visible symptom of some type of conflict between the cursor of the touchpad and the cursor of the pen.

I'll try searching some solution online, if I find something helpful I'll post it.

Meanwhile I hope this information helps

    Hello Andrea Losi,

Thank you for your reply and for sharing with us what may have caused the problem.

We appreciate your testing research on this issue and identifying the possible source of the problem.

Based on what you've described, it's likely that the problem is with the touchpad as we said earlier, rather than OneNote or the Office application itself.

We look forward to you finding some solutions and sharing them with us and we will document your solutions to help future users of this forum who may encounter such issues. Thank you for your efforts and your enthusiastic sharing.

    Sincere greetings

    Hi Mavis,

Yes, I've tried disconnecting the graphic tablet and using the panning tool with the mouse and it works fine. However when I select any pen or marker option with the mouse, and without having the graphic tablet connected, while before the default Windows cursor was replaced respectively with a dot or a vertical line, now the cursor remains the default one. I'm not a IT engineer or anything like that, but having to guess I think it's something related to the cursor and Office, since while using other apps such as Paint and selecting different tools the cursor changes correctly.

Yes, I've also tried changing device and the problem there doesn't manifest. Sorry if I forgot mentioning it before but it was kinda hard remembering all the things I've tried :) .

    Thank you for your attention
