Dear community,

I successfully create numerated appendix using numbering and creating a list as shown bellow:

but I have an issue with the formatting of the style. I do not know how to remove the space automatically added in the style (marked in yellow).

Please note that my paragrapher setting are set to 0:

How can I solve this issue?

You need to use the multilevel list dialog box to get access to the more "advanced" numbering options. Click in a paragraph which is formatted in your appendix style and click Home tab > Paragraph group > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List.

In the dialog box, click the More button to see all options for indentation. Verify that your paragraph style is associated with the list. See screen shot below.

    Hello Anthony,

This forum is a user-to-user support forum. My name is Charles and I am a fellow user with decades of experience using Microsoft Word. I have written extensively on using Word and have authored help articles on the Microsoft site.

You want to, instead, use the Define New MultiLevel list dialog with the More button pressed. You set the indents in that dialog, not in the style definition.

Step by step instructions for setting up your numbering can be found here: http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbe... (Mac version https://www.brandwares.com/bestpractices/2016/0...)

This method may seem a bit of work but not using it for important work is asking for trouble. Once you have it set, you can save a template with it and use that template for new documents where you need good numbering that can survive editing.

Once you have this set, the key to using this is to apply your numbering by applying the related style for each level, not using the numbering dialogs or buttons on the home tab. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to the styles if you want. This method, when properly used makes for bullet-proof numbering. It is not idiot-proof, because numbering applied through the buttons rather than styles will throw it off.

For numbering in appendices, see also How to number headings and figures in Appendixes in Microsoft Word by Shauna Kelly

If you are using the built-in heading styles, there are already built-in shortcuts for Headings 1-3. It is easy to add them for Headings 4-9.

Here are some videos that can help with these concepts:
