Sync problems for putty key files

Hey there,
i basically have a similar question to https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/pub-pem-file-type-sync-problem-on-onedrive/eec9da1c-7c9c-491c-829c-f6e1fcba31a2#msoffice, however this has been closed without a proper answer.

After needing to switch between 2 ********t University Accounts (which leaded to the deletion of my Desktop folder because Onenote thinks when you say to stop creating the backups thats a reason to completly delete the original folder) i am trying to sync some putty/ssh key files (.pub, .pem, .ppk). I run Win 11 21H2 Build 22000.795 and Onedrive for business 2022 Build 22.141.0703.0002 (64bit).

Since putty and ssh in general is quite relevant for me, i would really like to be able to sync these files as i was before the change

Thanks

Hi Tom m. DE,

Thanks for your valuable feedback and sharing updates with us and I really appreciate your effort and your precious time doing.

And I appreciate your kind words.

Yes, you may need to check and verify the result with us whether your organization IT admin restrict users from syncing specific file types in OneDrive for Business or not.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

Best Regards

Waqas Muhammad

    Dear Waqas Muhammad,
    thanks for your reply!

The Error Message is on German, so i will translate it here:

"The name or type of this file is not allowed. Rename it or remove it from your one drive"

I did a little bit more testing myself and noticed the following additional things:

    1. At least for the .pub files it seems to have a problem with the .pub. I tried renaming an empty txt (wapping .txt for .pub) and got the same error
    2. It does not seems as if these files are blocked in gerneral. I can upload them manually without probelms in the browser
    3. Once i uploaded that file manually the error goes away locally until i change anything about that file again. Then it occurs again and does not update

I also tested if it is a problem with publisher files (also .pub) they have the exact the same problem

*Meanwhile, if you don’t mind and if it is convenient for you, could you please send your copy of putty key file format to me so that I can look from my side, and I will check this behavior and help you to fix and verify the result with you.*As stated above i am pretty sure it is not that. I just created a file named test.pub and wrote a single d character in there and got the error

If yes, then could you please contact your Office 365 IT admin and check whether your organization IT admin restrict users from syncing specific file types in OneDrive for BusinessI will send a request to our IT Sevice Desk in the next days

    Dear Tom m. DE,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

As per your description, please don’t worry, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation.

According to Invalid file names and file types in OneDrive and SharePoint. Some certain characters and file/folder names have special meanings when used in file names in OneDrive. If a file or folder you’re trying to sync from OneDrive contains any of the characters listed, it may prevent files and folders from syncing.

To further check it, could you provide the screenshot about the error message? so we can understand your exact scenario and provide our suggestion in a productive manner, perhaps some related screenshots will be helpful.

And may I know does all the putty key files have sync issue. If yes, then could you please contact your Office 365 IT admin and check whether your organization IT admin restrict users from syncing specific file types in OneDrive for Business. For example, Login to SharePoint Admin center>Click on the “Settings” link under the left navigation>In the settings page, click on “Sync” next to “OneDrive” App. > Enable “Block syncing of specific file types” checkbox and check if admin enter specific file type and verify the result with us.

Meanwhile, if you don’t mind and if it is convenient for you, could you please send your copy of putty key file format to me so that I can look from my side, and I will check this behavior and help you to fix and verify the result with you.

If there is confidential information, then you can send it to me in Private Message

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

    Sincerely,

    Waqas Muhammad
